The Foster City Lions is involved with many activities that support our community. Listed alphabetically, some of these are: BLOOD BANK - This is held every two months, on the morning of the second Saturday at the Foster City Recreation Center. Lions publicize the blood bank, help set up and take down the area, act as hosts, help direct traffic, and provide refreshments while you rest after having donated blood. | Complete List | CONCOURS d'ELEGANCE - The Palo Alto Lions Club hosts a fine automobile show every June. For the past several years, they have invited other Lion clubs to participate by helping and by preparing and selling food and beverages. Our club sells beer, soft drinks, and water, and provides personnel to help staff the entry gates to the show. Typically, over 25 members and their families have participated and have raised many thousands of dollars. | Complete List | CRAB FEED - This year we held our third annual Crab Feed in March at the Foster City Recreation Center. Jointly sponsored by our club and the Foster City Pony Colt (youth baseball) League, all proceeds are earmarked for youth sports. This is an all-you-can-eat event with pasta, salad, bread & butter, and fresh cracked crab. Hors dčouvres and deserts are included. The evening includes a raffle and dancing to a DJ. Check the calendar page for next year's date. | Complete List | Top of Page | EASTER EGG HUNT - This holds the record of being over with in the shortest time, typically in less than 5 minutes. We meet at Ryan Park, usually at 1:00 PM on Easter Sunday, stake out areas for different age groups, and scatter thousands of chocolate Easter Eggs. Promptly at 2:00 PM the hunt starts! Of course the Easter Bunny is there to make sure that no child leaves with an empty basket. | Complete List | Top of Page | FLU CLINIC - Held at the Senior Center in the fall, when vaccines become available, we provide Influenza and Pneumonia vaccinations and Diabetes screening. In past years, the Flu Clinic was held in conjunction with a Health Faire sponsored by the Foster City Parks and Recreation department. Check the calendar page for next year's date. FOURTH OF JULY - Much planning and coordination with the Foster City Parks & Recreation Department goes into this event. Lions organize a midway, sell spaces for various vendors, provide power and booths where needed, and arrange for musical entertainment. Lions also arrange for chemical toilets and special security. The day starts with a Kiddy Parade, a Flag Ceremony, and opening remarks by our president. During the day and evening, Lions barbeque and sell beverages and food, and just before the fireworks, we sell glow sticks. Since the Fourth is our way to give back something to the community, we provide free food to most of the city employees. Needless to say, virtually all of the club members and their families participate and have a good time while working and socializing. | Complete List | Top of Page | SOCIALIZING - As they say, "all work and no play ..." We have several activities that are in the "play" area. | Complete List | Top of Page |
SPECIAL OLYMPICS - Come rain or shine, we barbeques and provide cheeseburgers with all of the trimmings for the special athletes and their coaches at a basketball meet at Hillsdale High School. One year it was pouring rain and very windy, but because we cooked under an overhang, at least the food was dry. We were wet, but did not mind. SUMMER CONCERTS - Each year, the Foster City Parks and Recreation Department sponsors six free concerts at Ryan Park. The Foster City Rotary Club and our club each handle three concerts, where we barbeque and sell food and beverages. The net proceeds are split evenly between the two clubs. | Complete List | Top of Page | WHITE CANE DAYS - One weekend, usually in October, is designated as White Cane Days. We stand near prominent stores and key locations in Foster City and ask people to contribute. In return they get "pinned" with a White Cane and leave with the knowledge that they are helping us help the disadvantaged who need eye care. Besides direct collection, we have entered into a partnership with our local Hillbarn Theater. They put on a special show, we provide food and beverages after the show, and the proceeds are split between the two organizations. These two functions result in thousands of dollars each year, which go for sight related projects. | Complete List | Top of Page | WORK PARTIES - We hold numerous work parties, as the need comes up. Usually, five to fifteen participants are needed. Some examples are:
YOUTH & COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES - Each year, there is a district-wide raffle involving most of the Lion Clubs. We sell books of ten and individual tickets ourselves. In addition, we involve many qualifying organization that raise funds by selling tickets themselves and get to keep most of the money. Of course, the balance of the money which is collected by our club is then contributed to other qualifying needy organizations. | Complete List | Top of Page | YOUTH SPORTS - From sponsoring teams, to providing funds for equipment and uniforms, to helping erect scoreboards and batting cages, to providing thousands of free hotdogs during tryout and sign-up days, we are heavily involved. The emphasis in our activities may be changing from year to year, as the need arises. For example, we may focus more on the needs of our seniors in coming years while de-emphasizing rebuilding together. This reprioritizing is done as part of the annual budget review, and considers inputs from all of our members.
